On view at Land of Tomorrow, Louisville
June 7 – July 27, 2013
Opening reception at 7pm on Friday, June 7th

Land of Tomorrow and Cesar Padilla are pleased to present El Campo de Mañana, featuring four new exhibitions set to open at our Louisville gallery in June. These exhibitions will include RIPPED, curated by Cesar Padilla, From the Kentucky Project, photographs by Bob Hower, Nests by Radford Brown, and Destroy Fashion by Patrick Thompson. The show will open on Friday, June 7th and remain on display until July 27th. This will also mark the return of Sasquatch Boutique, setting up shop this summer at Land of Tomorrow. Keep an eye out for future summer events to be announced.

Recently on display at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing in Los Angeles, RIPPED, curated by Cesar Padilla, consists of three decades worth of rock ‘n’ roll t-shirts and memorabilia highlighting the influence of punk rock on fashion. Those disgusted with the Met’s recent punk rock failure will be relieved to hear names such as The Damned, Descendents, and MC5, just to name a few. to name a few. Cesar, along with Radford Brown, have both previously worked on the fashion exhibition teams for Marilyn Monroe, Barbara Hutton, and Cher auctions, among many others. They also ran the online fashion department for Sothebys.com for two years. Lydia Lunch will be on hand to read her introduction to the book, as will other contributors.

From the Kentucky Project, by Louisville photographer Bob Hower brings together previously unexhibited photographs taken by the artist during his participation in The Kentucky Project, which took place between 1975-1977. The aim of the bicentennial project was to document life in each of Kentucky’s one hundred and twenty counties. Sixty of the photographs exhibited in The Kentucky Project now reside in the permanent collection of the American Museum of Art at the Smithsonian.

Radford Brown will be exhibiting a collection of new sculptures entitled Nests. Brown has previously sold work through the Swanson Crawley Gallery in the mid-90′s and recently exhibited in Provincetown, MA at the Foc’sle Gallery.

Rounding out the visual art portion of the show, Patrick Thompson will be introducing a new series called Destroy Fashion.

Following the opening reception on June 7th the Lydia Lunch fronted project RETROVIRUS will be performing at Headliners Music Hall (1386 Lexington Rd.). RETROVIRUS has been described as “a harrowing cross section of aural schizophrenia from No Wave skronk to bludgeoning Hard Rock and sleazy Jazz Noir to propulsive Psychedelia.” The group also features punk rock and No Wave badasses Algis Kizys, Bob Bert, and Weasel Walter. Also performing are Phantom Family Halo and Ritchie White Orchestra. Tickets are $15, doors at 9pm and 18+.

Also at Headliners, in conjunction with Land of Tomorrow, Cesar Padilla, and Wild and Woolly Video, on June 9th and 10th will be an exhibition of David Markey films featuring the debut of his pre-punk childhood super-8 movies Dine-O-Mite, Hey Dummy, The Movie of Movies, Summer Has Been Over for a Long Time, and The Omenous. This final screening will be followed with a question and answer session with David Markey. Tickets are $10, doors at 10pm, and 18+.

Coinciding with the opening of El Campo de Mañana, Sasquatch will be making its return to the Louisville area, setting up shop at the Land of Tomorrow Gallery. Sasquatch was a vintage clothing boutique owned and operated by Cesar Padilla and Radford Brown in Louisville during the mid-90′s.

Last Show of LOT’s Exhibition Cycle
Opening reception at 7pm on Friday, April 26th

Land of Tomorrow is pleased to present seven new exhibitions set to open at our Louisville gallery. These exhibitions will include: We Built Excitement II by Jennifer Marman & Daniel Borins, Visually Sound, curated by Aaron Michael Skolnick, featuring Daphne Arthur, Johnston Foster, Dionisios Fragias, Nathan Ritterpusch, and Jimmy Joe Roche, Adrift by Peter Haberkorn, Interplanetary Kisses? by Katja Loher, Thunder Perfect Mind, curated by Taylor Baldwin, featuring Tim Bearse, Matt Bollinger, Nicholas Des Cognets, Janelle Iglesias, Chris Mahonski, Ian Page, and Hannah Walsh, Breeder’s Envy (Makrospondylitic Thoroughbred Skeleton Mount) by Zoé Strecker, and Plop Art by Joel McDonald. The exhibition will open on Friday, April 26th at 7pm.

We Built Excitement II by Toronto-based duo Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins features a compilation of some of the artists’ most recent and innovative collaborations. For more than a decade the duo have been creating large-format sculptures, mixed media, installation and electronic art. The style and aesthetics of their work often blends mass communications and references that deconstruct and reassess aspects of twentieth century art history and its ideologies. In the varied grouping of works presented for this show, Marman and Borins illustrate new meanings arising through their contemporary stances with respect to the tensions arising within the narratives of historicity, formalism and politicization.

Visually Sound is an intense examination of the work from the roster of RARE Gallery, New York. In a brave move, the gallery opened itself to a curatorial exploration by Aaron Michael Skolnick, himself a visual artist. His eye guides us on a tour of work by Daphne Arthur, Johnston Foster, Dionisios Fragias, Nathan Ritterpusch, and Jimmy Joe Roche.

Peter Haberkorn is an artist living in Cincinnati, OH who makes three-dimensional collages using found material and scavenged objects. Originally inspired by his architectural restoration activities, Haberkorn has developed three bodies of work: collages incorporating textures and associations of animal forms and skins; constructions using telephones; and photography combined with found windows. For Adrift, he will be presenting a series of altered photographs and assemblage sculptures with an underwater theme.

In Interplanetary Kisses? by Katja Loher invites the viewer into a paradisiacal space populated with phantasms and magical creatures. This room-sized installation catapults the viewer into the land of the uncanny, away from our everyday experiences and hopes. Loher is a New York-based Swiss artist who belongs to a new generation of innovators and has taken video sculpture into a deeply-personal and innovative direction.

Thunder Perfect Mind, curated by visual artist Taylor Baldwin, brings together six artists who are familiar with the way the natural world supposedly works. Tim Bearse, Matt Bollinger, Nicholas Des Cognets, Janelle Iglesias, Ian Page, Chris Mahonski, and Hannah Walsh as artists have all cast themselves as interlocutors between their viewers and nature. They play the role of spiritual conduit, problematizer, conciliator, obscurer, or unreliable mediator between us and the natural realm. Their individual lenses each reflect a clearly defined and distinctly unique sense of a natural order, a function that seems to be at the root of their artistic motivation and practice. Yet none of the individual visions embodied within the show overlap one another. As represented by these six artists, nature is at turns sublime or abject, menacing or arcadian, ridiculous and mystical. Here are six unique views of the way the world works, or at least ought to.

Breeder’s Envy by Zoé Strecker is the stretch limousine of Thoroughbreds. Its outrageous length makes reference to extravagance and its virile posture suggests a raw, thrilling power. A preserved, real-bone, skeleton is familiar as tool for scientific inquiry. A formal mount such as this is also a kind of trophy that provides taxidermic proof of the prowess of the breeder, hunter, or specimen collector.

Plop Art by Joel McDonald takes its visual cues from typology in pornography and Pop Art tropes while thematically dealing with Christian guilt about the body, the equality of man, and paying homage to filmmaker David Cronenberg. Ultimately the work deals with depression and the desire of the artist to shit on those around him.

Land of Tomorrow, in coordination with the University of Kentucky Fine Arts Department, is pleased to announce Red Herring, an exhibition of recent graduate level work by Jackson Bullock, Peggy Coots, Michael J. Hamilton, Ivy Johnson, Trey Jolly, David N. Martin, and Mayuresh Moghe, produced under instructor Joel Feldman. There will be a closing reception on Saturday, April 27th at 5pm.

Red Herring – A fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented to divert attention from the original issue.

Each of the artists in this exhibition and their instructor often explore issues of red herring in terms of art making, whether consciously or unconsciously. Although the artists individually explore their own red herring and how it relates to their art making, they acknowledge that their understanding of the term may differ from one another, the instructor, and their audience. The title of this exhibition can possibly be viewed as the group’s communal red herring.

This Woman’s Work by Aurora Childs looks at labor, tools, and how our lives, though sometimes monotonous, create moments of tremendous beauty. Childs uses repetition and blasé materials to produce moments of beauty with chore based tools like the clothes iron and sewing machine. Through time-intense process and effort, the artist allows moments to happen that are analogous to a “holiday” from labor. These isolated moments occur as pigmented wax castings from cake molds, paintings produced with clothes irons, and drawings produced by sewing on paper.

Childs is a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky. Her work has been on display in theExpanded Music Project at Land of Tomorrow in 2011, The Lexington Art League, and the Carrie Ellis Juried Show at Barnhart Gallery in Lexington, KY.

Photo by Dr. Gerald Janecek, Dmitry Prigov in his studio, 1986.

Land of Tomorrow, in collaboration with University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences and College of Fine Arts are pleased to present ALФABET, an exhibition of Russian experiments in visual and sound poetry from the collection of Dr. Gerald Janecek. ALФABET will open with a reception on Friday, February 8th at 7pm and remain on display until February 22nd.

For most of the existence of the Soviet Union artists, writers, and musicians who chose not to work under the philosophy of Socialist Realism were subjected to persecution by the authorities. Labeled as “dissidents” or “non-conformists”, they worked underground, away from officially sanctioned performance and exhibit spaces. These creative individuals often met in the same spaces, knew the same people, and collaborated on works together. ALФABET is an exhibition of Russian art, poetry, and sound designed to highlight these relationships and collaborations and their continuation into present-day Russia. Among the many artists included in this exhibition are Dmitry Prigov, Erik Bulatov, Boris Konstriktor, Rea Nikonova, Serge Segay, Oleg Vassiliev, Art Group Voina, and Vladimir Yankilevsky.

This exhibition is based on the collection of Dr. Gerald Janecek. Dr. Janecek recently served as Professor of Russian and Eastern Studies at the University of Kentucky. His areas of research include Russian Literature of the Symbolist Period, Futurism, Post-Futurism, Contemporary Avant-garde Poetry, and Moscow Conceptualism. Dr. Janecek’s collection spans over four decades of travel and research in Russia and consists of some of the most notable and influential Russian artists from the latter half of the twentieth century.

Land of Tomorrow is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde. The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, February 15th at 7pm and remain on display until March 26th. The evening will also feature a performance from Lexington group Italian Beaches.

This show will mark Berndnaut Smilde’s first solo exhibition in the United States. Smilde draws upon his daily surroundings and spaces to confront the moment of friction between construction and deconstruction, most notably within his cloud creations and artificially recreating meteorological conditions indoors. He analyzes each space and their appearance, breaking them down to work with their details. Choices made in Smilde’s process are often situations that deal with duality, questioning inside and outside, temporality, size, the function of materials and architectural elements.

Only seen by a handful of people in their physical state, the fleeting moment of Smilde’s Nimbus clouds are forever encapsulated in the form of photographs. These photographs serve as documents, the only evidence of the cloud’s brief existence.

“You could see the cloud as a sign of misfortune. You could also read it as an element out of the Dutch landscape paintings in a physical form in a classical museum hall. At the same time I wanted to make (for once) a very clear image, an almost cliché and cartoon like visualization of having bad luck: ‘indeed, there nothing here and bullocks, it’s starting to rain!” -Berndnaut Smilde

Berndnaut’s previous cloud installations include Cukurcuma Hamam in Istanbul, Academy Minerva in Groningen, and Kasteel D’Aspremont-Lynden in Rekem, Belgium. Land of Tomorrow is excited to be included among the institutions and places in which Berndnaut’s installations have taken place.

Berndnaut Smilde received his MA in Fine Art from the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen and his work is found in numerous public and private collections throughout the world. Smilde has exhibited most recently at the Juming Museum in Taipei, Platform 57 in The Hague, and the Ronchini Gallery in London.

On view at Land of Tomorrow, Lexington
January 18-31, 2013
Opening reception at 6pm on Friday, January 18th
Admission after 7pm is $10

Land of Tomorrow is pleased to present Mannish, a solo exhibition by Thom Heyer. Mannish will open with a reception on Friday, January 18th at 6pm and remain on display through January 31st. The evening will also feature a performance from Lexington based ensemble EnVaGe, accompanied by dancers from the Lexington Ballet. Those who arrive early for the reception can attend the performance free of charge, admission after 7pm will be $10.

Thom Heyer is a visual artist and costume designer who lives in New York City. His work explores and questions notions of gender and sexuality through religious imagery and iconography, heavily influenced by Byzantine and Haitian Voodoo art of the saints. The use of found objects and scraps from Heyer’s personal history are essential to much of the work creating a uniquely Americana feel. His subjects are often people from American popular culture who have been influential in his life and each piece is considered an homage. Heyer sometimes refers to these pieces as “graven images” in reference to the second commandment in the King James Bible: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image”. Heyer has exhibited in New York, Dallas, Miami and Milan. This exhibit at Land of Tomorrow Gallery spans approximately 15 years of works from this series.

EnVaGe is a variable geometry ensemble dedicated to championing repertoire from both the standard practice and contemporary fields of Western art music. The ensemble is formed by approximately 16 solo performers who interact in different settings according to programmatic needs. Led by Artistic Directors Cesar Leal and Andrew Bliss, EnVaGe’s goal is to unify music across time periods, genres, and styles in one unique musical experience. For this performance EnVaGe will be performing works by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola, joined by dancers from the Lexington Ballet under the direction of Artistic Director Luis Dominguez.

Seen By Systems by Benjamin Grosser
Transmodrification by Nathaniel Hendrickson
With performances from Trotter/Riles and Fleece

On view at Land of Tomorrow, Lexington
December 14, 2012 – January 4, 2013
Opening reception at 6pm on Friday, December 14th
Admission to the exhibit from 6pm to 8pm is Free
Admission to the performance after 8pm is $5

Land of Tomorrow is pleased to present two new exhibitions, Seen By Systems by Benjamin Grosser and Transmodrification by Nathaniel Hendrickson. The opening reception will be held at our Lexington location on Friday, December 14th at 6pm, and will run through the 4th of January. The opening will be followed by performances from Louisville’s Trotter/Riles, and Lexington’s Fleece.

For this exhibition Champaign, Illinois artist Benjamin Grosser will be presenting Seen By Systems, consisting of two interactive works, Speed of Reality and Variable Mirror.

Speed of Reality uses a living room environment to explore the increasingly relied upon pace cuts of reality television and the effect they have on the viewer. The main issue that this interactive installation explores is the possibility of “reality” media is altering non-mediated reality.

Variable Mirror is designed to run continuously in an exhibition space. Viewers approach the work and see themselves in the screen, but the sizes of the pixels making up their screen mirror are dynamically changing. Variable Mirror stems from Grosser’s interest in how the construction of digital images alters our perceptions of reality.

Nathaniel Hendrickson’s Transmodrification deals with the human desire to understand and master the elements of the world, evolutionary cycles rendering previously revered models of order and complexity obsolete, and the growing expectation in science to solve the problems of existence. Transmodrification is the second installment of an ongoing series dealing with the deconstruction and reiteration of the events that shape and govern the underlying structures of our era.

Trotter/Riles is the duo of Tyler Trotter and Zak Riles. Both have been active within the Louisville music scene, and in the greater world, as musicians, promoters, sound engineers, and enthusiasts. Riles is best known as a member of the Temporary Residence Ltd. band Grails, while Trotter has performed with the Phantom Family Halo, and was the longtime sound man for the California Guitar Trio. This show marks their first-ever Lexington performance, and fourth show total, coming after their debut with Maserati at Zanzabar and with OM and Daniel Higgs in Bloomington, Indiana.

Fleece is Lexington, KY’s Electronic/Beat maker, Graham Tucker. Fleece started with simple loops of Tucker’s guitar and has progressed into the electronic world of beats. Instead of following the commonplace quantized standard sounding beats, Fleece focuses more on the current Los Angeles styled, left-field approach which highlights on feel, groove and emotion. He also has a passion for ambiance and sound design, which lead to evolving songs with mixtures of elements from jazz, R&B, and dance.

Image: Minor Threat at DC Space, photo by Susie J. Horgan

Featuring contributions from Juan Atkins and Alex Pincus, Robert Beatty and Eric Lanham, Rocky Horton, Ian MacKaye, Sean Metelerkamp, Moons and Gerald Moser, Vaughan Oliver, and Saving Our Style.

On view at Land of Tomorrow, Louisville
December 7, 2012 – January 8, 2013
Opening reception at 7pm on Friday, December 7th

Land of Tomorrow is pleased to present our second installment of the Expanded Music Project, a showcase of work illustrating the intersection between art and music. The opening reception will be held at our Louisville location on Friday, December 7th at 7pm, and the show will run through the 8th of January. Included in this exhibition will be work by Robert Beatty and Eric Lanham, Rocky Horton, Ian MacKaye, Sean Metelerkamp, Moons and Gerald Moser, Vaughan Oliver, and Saving Our Style.

One gallery in the Land of Tomorrow will be transformed into an homage to the Roller Disco. Throughout the 1970’s into the early 2000’s, roller disco found its home in roller rinks and discotheques across the world. Combing fluid movement, one continuous plane, and the guidance of DJ, the roller disco represents the ultimate confluence of music and architecture. Juan Atkins, the father of techno, will bring life to a roller rink designed by New York based designer Alex Pincus.

Robert Beatty and Eric Lanham will present a new collaborative work entitled Intercepted Ruins. The installation is based on Beatty’s album artwork for Lanham’s 2012 album, The Sincere Interruption (Spectrum Spools/Editions Mego), with Lanham providing an original sound-scape. The sequential abstractions from the cover will be coerced into the spatial realm via sculptures, video, lenticular and holographic prints.

Rocky Horton will be presenting his video work All the Songs God is Responsible For According to Grammy Awards Acceptance Speeches 1971-2012. As the title of the piece suggests, Horton’s video is a montage of Grammy acceptance speeches in which various recording artists thank God for their award.

Punk and Place highlights the potential of place to instigate and sustain dreams, beliefs, and revolution no matter scale, form, or program. For this installation, Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi) has chosen eight places that were important in his development as a musician and activist. These selections will be exhibited as scaled models.

The video and photographs of South African artist Sean Metelerkamp were the visual force behind the explosion of rap-rave group Die Antwoord. For the Expanded Music Project Metelerkamp will present a selection of these photographs along with the video for Die Antwoord’s Zef Side which he created for the group.

Atlanta based recording artist Moons and Austrian visual artist Gerald Moser have collaborated on an audio/visual installation based on Moser’s previous work, A Question of Space, which was presented at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York earlier this year. For their collaboration Moser has designed a projection on nylon rope with Moons providing the audio.

British graphic designer Vaughan Oliver is noted most for his work with 23 Envelope and v23 design studios, as well as his work with recording artists such as Dead Can Dance, The Breeders, This Mortal Coil, and the Pixies. For this exhibit Oliver will have his design for the Pixie’s Doolittle album blown up into a wall sized display along with a selection of posters as part of a larger installation working with the atmosphere and the era from which they were created.

Saving Our Style’s contribution to the Expanded Music Project consists of a scale build-out of a teenage hip hop fan’s bedroom circa 1994-1997. Their unique twist places their own images into the advertisements, posters, and album covers of those they idolized as teenagers, creating a “retro-futuristic” imagining of themselves.

On view at Land of Tomorrow, Lexington
November 9-23, 2012
Opening reception on Friday, November 9th at 6pm

Land of Tomorrow is pleased to present F UTILITY: Fringe Objects Outside Form and Function, featuring the work of Robert Beatty, Gian Calaci, June14 Meyer-Grohbrügge&Chermayeff, Joseph Kucinski, Ellen Molle, Jonathan Muecke, Aili Schmeltz, and Ainsley Wagoner. F UTILITY will open with a reception on Friday, November 9th from 6 to 10pm. The evening will feature a special performance of “Furniture Music” prepared by Eric Lanham and Rob Theakston.

Curated by Lexington, KY musician and designer Joseph Clark, F UTILITY is a multidisciplinary group exhibition highlighting the work of artists, designers, and architects, all working with qualities and expression found beyond typical consideration of form, function, structure, decoration, or use.

Robert Beatty spends his time moving from explorations of music and audio to the creation of physically unsettling objects and conditions, all intersecting at the crossroads of out-moded technology and the natural world. His contribution to F UTILITY seeks to build on the intensity of his psychedelic illustration found in the most recent Kramers Ergot and his previous installation at Lexington’s Institute 193.

Based out of Austin, Texas, artist and architect Gian Calaci’s work deals with the production of artificial light through methods that capture, distort, and adulterate its form. Taking the lamp and ripping it into a thousand baroque shards, Calaci presents an inverse world of light and dark, seen and unseen, and a craft-based, though thoroughly radical, technological form.

June14 Meyer-Grohbrügge&Chermayeff is a collaborative practice between Johanna Meyer-Grohbrügge and Sam Chermayeff. The duo previously worked together at SANAA in Tokyo from 2005 to 2010. June14 Meyer-Grohbrügge&Chermayeff, aims to create work with the goal of getting people to relate to architecture, for architecture to relate to people, and for people to relate to themselves.

Joseph Kucinski is a painter working in Portland, Oregon. He studies, at a monumental scale, how the chaotic forms of ink wash are able to navigate time, memory, and sensation, providing a platform for meditation and reflection.
Wrapping, stitching, and binding primarily in the color Black, Ellen Molle is a fiber artist and musician based in Lexington, KY. She holds a BFA in studio art from University of Kentucky.

A graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art and former intern architect at Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Jonathan Muecke’s work explores the extreme peripheries of design and creation of un-domesticated objects.

The work of Aili Schmeltz is defined by the study of landscape altered by the human hand. Her 2D and 3D work examines the social attitudes and decisions of those alterations, and the resultant human lifestyle shifts.

A musician and designer, Ainsley Wagoner seeks the point at which the simple and lovely begin to reveal dissonance. As a graphic designer and architect, her work explores light, as both a quality and material. Ainsley lives and works in Lexington, Kentucky.

Land of Tomorrow and Lexington Lexington are pleased to present performances by MV&EE, David Daniell & Douglas McCombs, and Jovontaes on Saturday, November 17th at 9pm. Admission is $8 and the show is 21+.

MV+EE are Matt Valentine and Erika Elder, a couple who have released albums under the MV+EE moniker for over a decade including recordings on Woodsist and Ecstatic Peace! record labels. Their improvisational psychedelic style draws from a balance of Indian ragas and rural Appalachian folk music, incorporating a mix of electric and acoustic instruments.

David Daniell is an accomplished guitarist who has played with some of the biggest names in underground and experimental music including Thurston Moore, Jonathan Kane, Loren Connors, and Christian Fennesz. Daniell last performed in Lexington as part of WRFL’s Boomslang Festival in 2010 as part of a trio with renowned minimalist composer Rhys Chatham. Douglas McCombs is best known for his work with Chicago post-rock icons Tortoise but has also released albums with Brokeback and Eleventh Dream Day.

Local three-piece Jovontaes will start off the evening with a set of sometimes-heavy, always-groovy rock jams. Comprised of members of a number of now-defunct Lexington bands (Tight Leather, Bedtime, RC Pro Am), the trio of Reid Small, Mark Murray, and Josh Blaine need no introduction to the local scene. Recent performances have shown Jovontaes tightening up while getting even farther out.
